Camera Placement and Tips
There is no single "correct" placement: the usable distance and angle depend on your camera's field of view (FOV). Use the points below as a guide rather than fixed rules.
Placement
- Distance and FOV. The working range depends on the camera's FOV. As a rule of thumb, the closer the camera is to where you make gestures, the better the recognition. A wider FOV sees more of the room but shrinks the effective distance at which a hand is large enough to read reliably.
- Make the gesture facing the camera. Recognition works best when the gesture is performed towards the camera. If the camera is in front of you and roughly at the same height as your palm, an upright hand gesture works well. If the camera looks at your hand from above or below, adjust the angle of your hand (or of the camera) so the palm faces the lens.
- Lighting. Avoid pointing the camera directly at bright windows. For dark rooms, use a camera with built-in IR LEDs: Superhome's models work also in complete darkness with no ambient light.
Image quality
- Resolution. There is no hard minimum. 2K is recommended; try not to go below 1080p, as lower resolutions noticeably reduce the maximum working distance.
- Frame rate. 10 to 15 FPS is sufficient.
Tested camera
All of our testing was done with the TP-Link Tapo C210 (2K). Its built-in denoising and image cleanup help Superhome reach the stated scores at the stated ranges. With a different camera the experience may improve or degrade depending on its image quality.
